Use in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Use of bovine colostrum powder intact® in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Since the publication of clinical trial results which showed intact® aids recovery from physical exertion in athletes, Numico Research has had numerous requests for the product from suffers of CFS.

We wish to emphasise that intact® has not been studied or proven as a treatment for CFS.  At this point in time it can only be speculated that it may be useful in the management of CFS.

Trials in athletes have been conducted over an 8 week period with each athlete consuming 20g or 60g of intact® daily.  At this level of supplementation intact® significantly increased performance and recovery from physical exertion compared to placebo.  In the athlete studies improvements in recovery were first seen after 4 weeks of continuous ingestion of intact®.

intact® contains high levels of immunoglobulins (15% w/w) and also a range of growth factors such as IGF-1, IGF-11, and TGF beta.

The Centre for Disease Research in the Unites States of America reports the experimental use of pooled human immunoglobulin in sufferers of CFS based on the unsubstantiated hypothesis that CFS is characterised by an underlying immune disorder.

A recent paper (Biol. Psychiatry.  1997; 41: 567-573) reported that CFS patients have low basal levels of IGF-1 and IGF-11.

Numico colostrum products have been scientifically studied in subjects of all ages, and have been marketed for over 7 years and found to be safe.  However, colostrum should not be taken by people with cow milk protein intolerance or people with lactose intolerance who may experience problems when consuming 20g or 60g of intact® daily.
